So most Cornish based surfers enjoy Watergate for its peak swell on the North end, forming powerful and running right handers. As well as the high tide banks and the jawdropping cliff views. But this year you can enjoy it for even more.   Contest surf fans roll up, because Watergate's now the stage for two of the year's prime UK surf events.   The English National Surfing Championships runs on the 30th April to the 2nd May. It's already received a tonne of support and excitement following its announcement in October of commitment to equal prize funds for the male and female open categories     Kamron Matthews training...

Newquay, Cornwall: With the World moving forward in gender equality, it's about time that sporting events follow suit. The English Surfing Federation committee have met today and agreed  that the 2016 English National Surfing Championships will be a gender equal event in terms of prize purse. This is a first in UK competitive surfing, as well as leading the way ahead of many other sports.  Andy Sturt, Chairman of the ESF - "The English Surfing Federation is committed to give equal status to men and women in prize money, this parity is long overdue" There are a few sports who are...

So a nice guy from Copenhagen sent us some watches to review. The brand’s called Soerensen and makes watches you can wear in and out of the water; at business meetings and the like. What was interesting though, was their target audience. The watches are designed for the ‘Gentleman Surfer’. And it got me thinking, what is a Gentleman Surfer? Am I one? I mean, I own regular suits as well as wetsuits. So I decided to find out just what a Gentleman Surfer might be. All while wearing a stylish new watch of course.   First up, I went...

As surfers, we’re pretty like-minded. We love the beach, the sea, the sun, even the cold. We love nature. But how many of us fit the environmentalist stereotype? Most of us are environmentally conscious and wouldn’t intentionally pollute. But we also have cars, we drive, we traverse the globe. We’re unknowingly hypocritical. We use mass-produced boards, mass-produced wax and our wetsuits are made from petroleum that harms the ocean. We all believe in environmental causes, but few of us ever follow this through with the products we use and the actions we take. Luckily, eco-friendly alternatives to surfing equipment are...

Earlier this year C-Skins and team riders Oli Adams & Vincent Duvignac ventured across the Atlantic to the East Coast of Canada. The goal was to test new suits where the sea came as close to frozen as possible.   Kitted out in C-Skins Winter 15 suits and accessories like the new Dryknit lining, they braved blizzards, minus degrees and a frozen sea.   Read on for the interview.     Either side of the runway the snow was packed as high as the plane. Another plane actually crashed trying to land.   So what was the forecast looking like...

Earlier this month I went to the Elusive Welsh Open, a surf contest in South Wales at Porthcawl. I love going to Wales! The girls and guys who surf there are a good laugh. I always end up hooking up with my friends Georgie and Libby at surf contests as well as having gone on trips away with them too, so it's nice to know a few friendly faces already. Adam Laister, the videographer and landlocked surfer/snowboarder came along for the ride. The original plan had been to spend about 4 days in Wales, allowing us plenty of time to hunt...

Newquay surf girls Jen Pendlebury and Allannah Brown stepped up to the mark to organise the 2015 Halloween Surf in style! It has attracted more and more people every year and raised £ for The Wave Project.   The Wave Project is a surf charity helping young vulnerable people in the UK reduce anxiety and improve confidence through surfing. The work they do makes a massive difference to the young people they are able to help and they are growing and reaching out to more every year.   Towan beach was a sight to see this year with all the creative costumes:...

Words and photos by Josh Sainsbury and Laura Klonowska   Once again university surf societies raced their way to Newquay in full force for the annual BUCS surf competition. Fistral beach played host, providing slightly dismal day one surf and then left the event hanging with a flat weekend forecast, causing an early finish to the contest. Yet the vibes were high; DIY slip’n slide, flat day wavecraft, Redbull (providing the caffeine and the beats), booze, pasties, pizza and a strong commitment to riding a foamie. Making the best of it. In convoys of cars, mini buses and coaches, universities...

Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015 Day 5 - 18th September Ain Daab Casablanca   Repercharge 3 – Men’s Open Seb Smart was up bright and early. He'd also been one of the only surfers to brave the layday stormy conditions. Sebastian picked out the big ones that stood up and made his turns big. He scored enough on just a few waves, then his leash snapped making for a testing swim back to shore. No worries for Seb as he finished in second.   Snapped leash, the price for charging hard. Repercharge 3 –...

Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015 Day 6 - 19th September Ain Daab Casablanca     The Finale day was fantastic as team England cheered on Megan Penny.   She was the last surfer standing in our team and surfed her mini final and final while the team flew the flags and watched in anticipation.     Megan did amazingly, picking the right waves to earn her points; rolls and spins and powerful spraying cutbacks on the best faces. Second in the mini final and then fourth in the final against the best European bodyboarders,...

Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015 Day 4 - 16th September Ain Daab Casablanca Repercharge 2 – Women’s Open Flora's first repo round went fantastically. She was lined up against low scorers and was clear winner. Snaps and a re-entry and a higher scoring backhand again. Repercharge 2 – Men’s Bodyboard Dave Renaud has a tough day ahead fighting to keep a place in both Bodyboard and Men’s open. Bodyboard not being Dave’s specialist sport he came joint 3rd with the Welsh, both scoring exactly the same two waves at 1.13 each. Repercharge 2 – Men’s...

Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015 Day 3 - 15th September Ain Daab Casablanca   Repercharge 1 - Men's Open Sam Harwood was again our earliest competitor off the mark, and boy did he do well. Newquay boy Sam scored highly for the heat with a 5.33 after finding a bowly wave and tore it up. The competition is high at this event so scores are at world class level. He built on this finding back up scores to keep him in the lead. Winner of the heat and next round for Sam is repercharge...

Heat by heat write up of the European Surfing Championships 2015 Day 2 - 14th September Ain Daab Casablanca   Progressive 1 - Mens Open Sam Harwood was up bright and early for the second heat of the day. Light offshores gave favourable conditions to the other days but still did not give him many open faced options. He dropped the first score of the heat, a small one, but having opened up he could now be pickier and wait for the bigger scoring waves. Sam Harwood, bright and breezy. Sam found a decent left and made the best of...
